What I Feed My Pitbull & Why
Knowing what I feed my dog might help you make informed decisions for your dog. I adopted Pillow, my female pitbull mix, in 2020, and have gotten a routine down when it comes to food. It doesn’t always stay exactly the same, but these are my go-to foundational items.

Taste of the Wild Pacific Stream Salmon
I had Pillow on a chicken recipe of another brand that I can’t remember when I first got her, but she was having a skin issue where a tiny tuft of hair would get stuck with dead skin and it would need to be pulled out, and she was itchy around her body. I found out from my first dog grooming boss that many dogs get skin issues from a chicken allergy. I switched her to this salmon kibble and the skin issues stopped.
Every dog food will have varying portion sizes for different dogs by weight. Google always helps, but each food might be different. Pillow is about 65 pounds and gets 3/4 cup of food twice a day. Her vet (shoutout to Bixby Animal Hospital in Torrance, CA) has had nothing but good things to say about her health.
Acana Freeze Dried Dog Treats Lamb & Apple Recipe
Pillow won’t eat her food when she is anxious or knows I am going to leave. I crumble two of these over her food, wet it a tiny bit, and mix it around. She completely forgets her anxiety and licks the bowl clean.
I chose lamb apple as the flavor, becuase it is good for dogs to get varying types of meat in their food. She already has a fish with her main food, so the other options are lamb, beef, bison, and more… but no chicken. If you think your dog is allergic to chicken, check all food and treat packaging for chicken in the ingredient list. Sometimes they don’t say it on the front but it still may have some form of chicken in it.
Greenies
I give Pillow one Greenie a day, because I have heard that too many can cause intestinal issues. Her breath is never bad and I don’t often brush her teeth. Her vet even said her teeth look great for her age. She prefers the specific Greenies brand to other dental treats.
Blue Buffalo Wilderness Trail Treats: Duck Recipe
These are Pillow’s favorite treats. She gets one or two for going into her crate when she stays home alone. She does not get this particular treat for any other reason than the crate.
If she does not get crated, she will destroy the wall because of her separation anxiety. After doing extensive crate training research and doing it consistently, she goes right in. I couldn’t force 60 pounds of pitbull into a crate every day, so it has been a life saver. She also hangs out in there sometimes when we are spending time in the living room.
Moderation Is Key
Whatever you give your dog, make sure it is the right amount. In my grooming career I have seen dogs pass too early due to obesity and wouldn’t wish that on anyone.
